NEW POSSIBLE AQUACULTURE AREAS IN BANGLADESH

HOUSE-HOLD AQUACULTURE

  • In the urban and periurban areas hatcheries or tanks can be set up in the yards, roofs and other vacant or unused places where they can not only produce fish or shrimp fry, ornamental fish, live food (Artemia, Rotifers, Algae, etc.) but also can yield considerable amount of fish.
  • In aquarium, people can breed, nurture and finally produce indigenous as well as exotic valuable and attractive ornamental fish, aquatic plants and other aquatic invertebrates.

LIVE FOOD CULTURE IN SALT BEDS

  • Along the coast line there are many salt beds where the most valuable, nutritious and palatable live food (Artemia) for fish and shrimp larvae can be commercially produced.

DITCHES IN HILLY AREAS

  • There are many scattered ditches, cascades or springs, etc. found in the hilly areas in Bangladesh which are totally unused and untouched field in the sense of Aquaculture. So, there is a great scope for the production of fish and other aquatic animals specially by involving the tribe communities.

OFF SHORE MERICULTURE

  • The large Bay of Bengal is only being exploited for certain marine fish harvesting, but most of the areas are unexploited and unused. Hence, different types of permanent structures and cages can be set up for the production of some important and valuable marine fish species adapting the technologies and management system for the production of salmon, trout, mussel, oysters, aquatic weeds, etc. in Norway, Chile, Scotland, Canada, Japan, etc.

WASTEWATER AQUACULTURE

  • Establishing wastewater treatment plants aquatic weeds, mussels and certain air breathing catfish and carps can be input there, which is also followed as integrated aquaculture approach in developed countries.

ARTIFICIAL REEF ESTABLISHMENT

Like Japan, France, USA, UK, etc. we can even install some artificial structures (unused ships, towers, etc .) as artificial reefs for the enhancement of the natural fish recruitment and production providing them natural breeding, feeding, shelter and nursery grounds.
