Build Your Own Notebook
Computer aficionados have been building their own systems since the advent of the PC. Notebooks are different. Because they’re small, with crowded interiors, building a notebook from scratch is hard to do correctly, even for the pros. The fact is that most vendors, including the big, recognizable names, don’t build their own notebooks. They basically do what we’re going to do in putting together our own notebook — take a barebones system and add parts to order.

Troubleshoot Your Wireless Network
For computer users, the only thing better than a home network is a wireless home network. In the past, wireless networks were slow, finicky, relatively difficult to set up, and good only for networking computers. Modern wireless networking equipment is much closer in speed to a wired network; is very easy to configure, thanks to browser-based setup menus; and can be utilized by a number of gadgets ranging from DVRs (digital video recorders) to console game systems to handheld devices. Wireless networks can still be finicky compared to the stable performance of wired networks, but as long as you know what components to shop for and how to properly configure them, the benefits of going wireless certainly exceed the costs.

Power supplies don’t get much love from the average PC DIYer. Think about the first time you built a computer. It’s not hard to see why: The power supply plays a support role in your system. Whereas your CPU, memory, motherboard, and even your hard drive affect your system’s speed, the PSU simply provides the power those components need. But you’re a power user now…

Finding the Best Value in Java IDEs
Productivity is critical in today’s enterprise development environments, and it should be among your primary criteria when evaluating development tools. However, productivity is difficult to measure absolutely because of the nature of developer skills and the projects to which those skills are applied. Free and open source IDEs further complicate the picture. Free solutions might seem to deliver the best value, but does free translate into productive development? Get acquainted with several IDE offerings and decide for yourself.

Cleaning a Complex Java Code Base
It would be nice to be able to analyze and unit test every line of code, but obviously such an approach would be cost prohibitive and impractical in today’s business environment. Take a look at an approach to code standard checking and unit testing for large, complex Java code bases that helps ensure faster delivery of more reliable code.

Get Creative on the Java ME Platform
The Java ME platform (formerly, J2ME) is six years old. Is it the right platform for your next mobile development project? More importantly, does it live up to its “write once, run anywhere” notoriety? Look in on the state of Java ME and its CLDC/MIDP stack and APIs.

Java’s Desktop Comeback
Would you use the Rich Client Platform to build a vertical application or a custom enterprise application? Discover what you get with the Eclipse and NetBeans platforms and if using those platforms means we’re going to see rich Java applications again after convincing ourselves that Java is good for only the Web and middleware.

Overclock Your PC
If you just build a system, turn it on, and start using it as is, you’re leaving performance on the table. That PC will not be as fast as it could be until you take a little time to change some of its settings. You’ve already bought all of the components — making your hardware and software sing won’t cost you another dime. This month’s two Spotlight articles will help you do what it takes to unearth the hidden speed and responsiveness waiting inside your case.

X-Ray Vision: 3D Flash Memory
Stacking Layers of Silicon on Chips.

White Paper: DisplayPort
With some new technologies, it is easy to see that they fill a pressing need and will be instantly successful. Still others won’t make a market impact because they’re too similar to already available technologies. But with so many new technologies emerging every day, it’s tough to know ahead of time what type of impact they will have. For instance, the newest digital video interface, called DisplayPort, fits into the latter group. DisplayPort offers a digital display/video standard that somewhat resembles already available standards (DVI and HDMI), which may limit its appeal. However, DisplayPort has the backing of several large tech companies (such as AMD/ATI, Dell, Intel, and Nvidia, to mention a few), which may give it the support it needs to become a successful standard.

Building Real-Time Applications with Continuous Query Technology
The client/server development model prevalent in the mid-1990′s resulted in extremely easy-to-build rich GUI applications that interacted directly with a relational database. 4GL tools such as Visual Basic and PowerBuilder let even junior developers visually compose both the presentation and most of the backend data binding. While this made for impressive Rapid Application Development (RAD) productivity, the client/server architecture was severely challenged when dealing with real-time environments where the data changes rapidly and applications require visibility to the correct data at all times. As a result, client applications were forced to poll the database continuously to check for changes…

Previews
It’s post E3 and we’re showing off the best of the previews like they’re the girl next door or the hottest mom on the block. You can look but not touch. Bad, naughty previews.

Features
If you’re into drama, take a thrill to the highs and lows of the Super Battle Opera. If you’re into the arts, attend the swanky opening of Artcade. If you’re into film, gaze upon the digitized players of the cast of forgotten games in The Dark Side of Retrogaming. If you’re into unspeakable acts of the macabre nature, then you’re a freak and we can’t help you.

Wii
You know how easy it would have been for us to break out the numerous Wii puns for this text, but we chose to take the high road instead. It’s what Mario’s dead cousin, Carbunkle, would have wanted.
